History of Piazza del Duomo, Florence

Beyond the iconic monuments it encompasses, Piazza del Duomo has its fair share of fascinating history! Originally, the square started as a cemetery that had developed around the Baptistery. Toward the end of the 13th century, it began to transform into the recognizable form we see today. Back then, Florence, or Florenza as it was called, was growing and becoming more important, leading to the building of city walls and new churches.

Fast forward to the 19th century, and the square got even bigger! They had to knock down parts of Palazzo Arcivescovile and Canonica del Duomo for this expansion. And guess what? A piece of it is known as Piazza San Giovanni. So, from a cemetery to a bustling square, Piazza del Duomo's history is quite a journey!
